Business Experience

StemLife has been a trusted leader in Malaysia’s stem cell banking industry since 2001. With a strong commitment to quality, the company follows strict procedures to ensure the safe collection, precise processing, and secure storage of cord blood, earning the trust of families seeking reliable healthcare solutions.

In 2004, StemLife made history as the first company in Malaysia to release a cord blood unit for a sibling transplant to treat Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML). Since then, the company has released more cord blood units to support treatments for conditions such as cerebral palsy, thalassemia major, leukemia, and brain injuries. By ensuring the quality and readiness of stored stem cells, StemLife has helped families in critical moments. As part of a global network, the company has facilitated the release of 77 cord blood units to 21 healthcare institutions across 10 countries, demonstrating its significant international reach.

In 2014, StemLife became the first and only stem cell bank in Malaysia to offer families the option to store three types of stem cells from the umbilical cord: Haematopoietic Stem Cells (HSC) from cord blood, Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC) from cord tissue, and Epithelial Stem Cells (EpSC) from the cord lining. This breakthrough provides families with more possibilities for future medical treatments.

StemLife’s services are strengthened through its partnership with a cGMP-certified laboratory approved by the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) and the Ministry of Health (MOH). This collaboration ensures access to advanced expertise and cutting-edge infrastructure for processing, harvesting, and expanding Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC), all while maintaining the highest industry and regulatory standards.

The company consistently meets global quality benchmarks. In 2024, StemLife received its fourth consecutive accreditation from AABB, the international gold standard for cord blood banking. It also became the first cord blood bank in Malaysia to achieve both the Good Distribution Practice for Medical Devices (GDPMD) Certification and the Establishment Licence. StemLife is fully licensed by the Ministry of Health and holds the MS ISO 15189:2022 accreditation, further demonstrating its commitment to quality and compliance.

Beyond cord blood banking, StemLife is expanding into diagnostic services to offer families a wider range of healthcare solutions. This growth reflects the company’s ongoing focus on innovation and its mission to provide greater value to clients.

With a proven track record of quality, care, and innovation, StemLife remains at the forefront of stem cell banking and healthcare services, helping families secure their future health and well-being.

Collection Kit

The collection kit includes a sterile, double-wrapped blood bag pre-filled with the anticoagulant CPDA-1 and blood collection set for maternal blood.

Transportation Container

StemLife utilizes the StemCool shipping system, featuring thermal insulation and an IATA-compliant protective shield, to maintain ambient temperature during transport back to the laboratory.

Shipping Info

The umbilical cord blood sample will be hand-delivered using our StemCool shipping system. This provides a secure time and temperature protocol that has been proven effective in maintaining stem cells within the range of optimal temperature.

Processing Method

Stem cells are processed using the AXP® II System, a globally recognised automated technology from the USA. This system ensures safe and efficient harvesting of stem cells, meeting international standards for transplants and treatments.

Components Stored

The final component stored is 20ml of the "buffy coat" layer of the blood, which holds both white cells and stem cells. Parents are provided with lab report describing:

  • Cord blood: volume, Total Nucleated Cell (TNC) count, CD34+ stem cell count, CD34+ stem cell viability, ABO typing and sterility.
  • Maternal blood: Infectious disease status for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis, CMV IgM, CMV IgG and HTLV

Storage Method

Cord blood stem cells are stored in a 25 mL cryobag encased in a metal cassette. These metal cassettes provide an additional barrier of protection. Stem cell units are stored in the vapour phase of cryogenic liquid nitrogen tanks at temperatures approximately -1960C.

Licensing & Accreditation

  • Cord Blood & peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) licensed by Ministry of Health Malaysia under the PHFS Act 1998.
  • Accredited by the international cord blood banking gold standard AABB.
  • MS ISO 151897 accredited – Medical Lab Testing.
  • Good Distribution Practice for Medical Device (GDPMD) Certification and the Establishment License
  • Participation in College of American Pathologists USA program since 2003.

StemLife has released over 500 peripheral blood stem cell units for therapies.
