Family Bank: Seracell

Seracell

About

Seracell was founded by doctors at the stem cell transplant unit of Rostock University Hospital.

Business Experience

Seracell Pharma AG was founded in 2002 by doctors working at the stem cell transplant unit of Rostock University Hospital. These doctors have together performed over 1,000 stem cell transplants from peripheral blood and bone marrow. The clients served by Seracell's transplant business are adult patients in German hospitals who were suffering from malignant diseases of the blood or bone marrow.

In 2009 Seracell began offering private cord blood banking for families. Seracell's mission was to make family cord blood banking affordable, with prices much lower than those of competing banks in Germany. One of the main reasons that Seracell was able to keep prices low was because they did not perform cell separation before freezing; they stored whole blood. In September 2014, Seracell became Germany's fastest growing family cord blood bank in terms of monthly stem cell units added.

In 2017, Seracell was acquired by Vita 34, Germany's oldest and largest cord blood bank. In 2021, Vita 34 and Famicord merged to form the largest family bank network in Europe. Seracell continues to be a leading supplier of transplants from peripheral blood and bone marrow in Germany.

Clinical Experience

Seracell's medical staff have performed over 1,000 blood stem cell transplants in adult patients.

Insurance

Seracell’s customers are covered by bankruptcy protection. In the unlikely event of Seracell filing for bankruptcy, a German notary will have the cord blood units re-located to BioKryo GmbH, Germany, a company within the network of the Fraunhofer IBMT.
