Cord Blood Bank Stores Adipose-Derived MSC for Personal Therapy

February 2018

Bangkok Stem Cell has developed a patented procedure to extract your own MSC from adipose (fat) tissue which is safe, scar-less, and provides ready cells should they ever be needed for regenerative therapies. Abdominal fat can either be taken out during cesarean section birth, abdominoplasty, or liposuction procedures.

In humans, adipose tissue is located beneath the skin (subcutaneous fat), around internal organs (visceral fat), in bone marrow (yellow bone marrow) and in the breast tissue. Adipose tissue is found in specific locations, which are referred to as adipose depots. The highest percentage of cells within adipose tissue is adipocytes, and the mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) can be found surrounding adipocytes.

Adipose tissue is one of the richest sources of MSC and is much easier to harvest than bone marrow. Due to the extreme ease of collecting MSC by liposuction, these cells will probably constitute a major source for personal banking, research and multiple therapies. The minimally invasive liposuction procedure is performed in areas of unwanted adipose tissue such as the anterior abdomen, flanks and hips. These areas are chosen as they are safer and can be harvested without leaving scars. Usually an amount of 10gm of tissues are adequate for multiplication of 10 million cells.

The MSC are of intense therapeutic interest because they represent a population of cells with the potential to treat a wide range of acute and degenerative diseases. Clinical trials with MSC have tested therapies for many incurable conditions, such as:

  • Autism
  • Auto-Immune Diseases: Lupus (SLE), Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
  • Cardiac indications: Cardiomyopathy & Ischemic Heart Disease
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Diabetes, Types 1 & 2
  • Liver Cirrhosis
  • Graft versus Host Disease (GvHD )
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Parkinson Disease
  • Retinitis Pigmentosa

Bangkok Stem Cell provides clients with a cryogenic vapour shipper for stem cell transfer outbound from Thailand. This cryogenic vapour shipper is designed for the safe transportation of stem cells at cryogenic (-190°C) temperature. It does not hold any liquid-form nitrogen as it has an absorbent wicking material that can charge with liquid nitrogen, thus providing constant cryogenic temperature (-190° C) for 14 days in vapour shipping.

This technology of dry, spill-free vapour-phase shipping is implemented to keep your stem cells safe, healthy, and ready for your physician to use. The cryogenic vapour shipper transports your stem cells with a “non-hazardous” classification throughout the world, thus reducing costs and helping to assure sample viability.

At Bangkok Stem Cell, personal storage of adipose MSC provides parents of the baby with their own bio-banking for future medical needs.
