Business Experience
STORY
Founded 23 years ago by Professors Dr. Cheong Soon Keng and Dr. Then Kong Yong, CryoCord has grown into a leading and comprehensive medical biotechnology company in the region. Boasting a substantial 65% market share (Frost & Sullivan report), CryoCord’s evolution has expanded from its initial focus on cord blood storage to becoming a fully-fledged cell-based company. Their journey has been marked by consistent growth, including expansion into areas such as mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), natural killer cells NK cells, Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell (CAR T-cells) therapy, and other groundbreaking cell-based research.
In 2006, CryoCord achieved a medical milestone by performing the first successful cord blood transplant in Malaysia using stored sibling’s cord blood for a leukaemia patient at Hospital Kuala Lumpur. In 2009, CryoCord launched a range of mesenchymal stem cell products derived from umbilical cord, bone marrow, fat tissue and tooth pulp — the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. In addition to stem cell banking, CryoCord ventured into immune cell banking services in 2020. This service involves collecting, processing, and cryopreserving immune cells, including NK cells, from one’s blood for potential future use in cell-based therapies.
CryoCord is actively participating in clinical trials to explore innovative therapies for diseases with no satisfactory treatment methods and to address unmet medical needs. Currently, through a subsidiary of the CryoCord group, Plutonet is collaborating with Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) on CAR-T clinical trials for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL) patients. Additionally, CryoCord has obtained approval from the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) under the Ministry of Health (MOH) to conduct a clinical trial with University Malaya (UM) using umbilical cord derived mesenchymal stem cells to treat perianal fistulas in patients with Crohn’s disease.
CryoCord operates from its fully-owned 120,000-square-foot Bio-X Centre, located in the smart city of Cyberjaya, Malaysia. This milestone was achieved without reliance on bank borrowings highlighting the company’s strong financial foundation. The building is supported by a dual-feed power supply from Tenaga Nasional Berhad, ensuring uninterrupted power 24/7, 365 days a year.
