Upstate Cord Blood Bank

Public: Public

SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse NY plans to host a new public cord blood bank, for which ground was broken in Sept. 2012. NY State Sen. John DeFrancisco played a key role in securing a $15 million grant to construct the facility, which hopes to open in late 2014.

Upstate’s Community Campus provides obstetric services and is home to the Regional Perinatal Center, which offers advance perinatal care to patients throughout Upstate New York. Upstate officials hope the cord blood bank will receive donations from roughly half of the 20,000 births per year in Central New York state. Nearly a dozen researchers at Upstate hope the bank will supply stem cells from umbilical cord blood that they can use in their studies seeking new treatments for various diseases.
