NY Blood Center: National Cord Blood Program
FACT: Public
About
Bank Director: UNKNOWNThe NY Blood Center (NYBC), founded by Dr. Pablo Rubinstein, is the world's first public cord blood bank, and for over two decades was the largest single public bank in the world. NYBC was a founding member of the Netcord international cord blood bank network (Netcord has since merged with FACT). NYBC was the first cord blood bank in the US to obtain an FDA license for their cord blood product, which they have named HEMACORD™.
The NY Blood Center, which in 2004 changed the name of its cord blood program to the "National Cord Blood Program", is the world's oldest and most prestigious public cord blood bank. For many years they could claim to have provided most of the cord blood used in transplants around the world. In Sept. 2009 the NY Blood Center began listing their cord blood inventory on the NMDP registry as well.
As of spring 2020, the NYBC stopped operations of the National Cord Blood Program.
Collection hospitals for the NY Blood Center did NOT require advance registration: Mothers gave a partial consent to collect the cord blood during labor, and only if the collected cord blood is suitable for transplantation would the mothers will be given additional education post-delivery and asked for a final banking consent.
