About

Bank Director: Jean Villard, MD, PhD

The Cord Blood Bank Geneva (CBB Geneva) at Geneva University Hospital, together with the Cord Blood Bank Basel, are the two public cord blood banks in Switzerland that store cord blood from from unrelated donors. The CBB Geneva and the CBB Basel list their donations on the registry Swiss Blood Stem Cells (SBSC), which is WMDA accredited.

The CBB Geneva’s processing facility operates within the Geneva University Hospitals. The facility obtained its license from the Federal Office of Public Health for the storage of blood stem cells and stored its first unrelated cord blood unit in 2001. Since its establishment, the CBB Geneva has implemented and continuously updated its operations according to the national guidelines, the Eurocord guidelines as well as the NetCord-FACT standards. The NetCord-FACT accreditation was renewed in 2024.

The CBB Geneva collaborates with one fixed collection site at the Maternity department of Geneva University Hospitals for the collection of unrelated and related cord blood units. Related cord blood collection is also performed at non-fixed collection sites.

The Geneva hospital web page on birth has a section on Cord Blood Donation (in French only). Here is the link to the hospital brochure
