Cord Blood Bank Basel

FACT:

About
Bank Director: Corrine Widmer, MD, PhDThe Cord Blood Bank of Basel at University Hospital Basel (CBB Basel) is the first amongst two public banks in Switzerland. The CBB Basel initiated unrelated cord blood banking in Switzerland and stored its first unrelated cord blood unit in 1997. The second public bank in Switzerland is CBB Geneva at Geneva University Hospitals. Both the Basel and Geneva CBBs use the donor registry Swiss Blood Stem Cells (SBSC), which is WMDA accredited.
The CBB Basel’s processing facility, the Cellular Therapy Laboratory, operates within the Diagnostic Hematology Department of the University Hospital Basel. Since its establishment, the CBB Basel has implemented and continuously updated its operations according to national guidelines and the NetCord‑FACT standards. The CBB Basel obtained license from the Federal Office of Public Health for storage of blood stem cells in 2000 and renewed its NetCord-FACT accreditation in 2024.
The CBB Basel collects unrelated cord blood donations from three maternity clinics at the Swiss hospitals below. Related cord blood donations are also collected at collection sites throughout Switzerland.
- University Hospital Basel
- Cantonal Hospital Aarau
- Inselspital Bern
The Basel hospital web page on birth has a section on Cord Blood Donation, with links to consent forms in German, French, Italian, and English. Here is the link to the hospital brochure in German about Öffentliche Nabelschnurblutspende (public cord blood donation).
