California's Umbilical Cord Blood Collection Program

Public: Public

About

The Umbilical Cord Blood Collection Program (UCBCP) is a California state program administered by the University of California Davis Health System. The UCBCP was created by a law passed in late 2010 that funds public cord blood banking by raising the cost of a birth certificate copy.  For more information, see the article by UCBCP director Dr. Suzanne Pontow, Capturing California's Diversity Through Cord Blood Collections.

Cord blood donations are collected from multiple hospitals within five regions of the state that have high population density and high racial diversity.

  1.     San Diego,
  2.     Los Angeles,
  3.     the Central Valley,
  4.     the San Francisco Bay area, and
  5.     Sacramento.

To see which hospitals are active in each region, pull up the state of California on the map of USA Donation Hospitals.
