Öffentliches Bankwesen

Öffentliche Nabelschnurblutbanken unterstützen die Gesundheit der Gemeinschaft. Sie sammeln Nabelschnurblutspenden von gesunden Schwangeren und lagern diese ein. Man kann mit diesem Nabelschnurblut das Leben eines Patienten retten, wenn dieser eine Stammzelltransplantation eines gesunden Spenders benötigt und eine Übereinstimmung der Gewebemerkmale zwischen Spender und Empfänger bestätigt ist. In Deutschland ist das größte Spenderregister die Deutsche Knochenmarkspenderdatei (DKMS). Patienten mit einem seltenen genetischen Gewebetyp erhalten eher Nabelschnurbluttransplantation. Falls Eltern das Nabelschnurblut ihres Neugeborenen an eine öffentliche Bank spenden möchten, muss die Entbindung in einem Krankenhaus erfolgen, welches mit der öffentlichen Nabelschnurblutbank zusammen kooperiert.

BACECU "Banco Altruista Mexicano de Células Progenitoras de Cordón Umbilical"  (BACECU) is a public cord blood bank operated by the charity Fundacion Comparte Vida. They operate in a Ministry of Health building but are supported by private funds. Cord blood donations are collected in  Mexico City.

The Donate or Save (Donarlo o Guardarlo) program of the family bank Cordon Vital offers parents education about cord blood donation and works with two public banks.  The program is available to parents who will deliver with private practice physicians and in private hospitals.

IMSS "Banco de Células Progenitoras Hematopoyéticas de Sangre de Cordón Umbilical del Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social" is a public cord blood bank operated by the Mexican Institute of Social Security that collects donations in Mexico City D.F.  The donations are available to IMSS patients throughout Mexico.

The donations are available to patients at the University Hospital.
