Swiss Stem Cells Biotech (SSCB) offers parents a "hybrid" banking model that allows cord blood to crossover from private to public usage. After storage in the family bank, the child's cord blood is also listed on a registry of HLA types that may be searched by anonymous patients. In the event that their cord blood matches a patient in need, parents have two choices. One choice is to donate the cord blood to the patient and be reimbursed for their storage costs. The other choice is to keep saving the cord blood for their family and be removed from the registry.
