Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease in which the body loses the ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin, leading to elevated levels of blood sugar. Type 2 diabetes usually develops gradually in adulthood. Type 1 diabetes has early onset and is actually an auto-immune disease in which the body attacks its insulin producing cells. One study in Australia is trying to use stem cells to prevent Type 1 Diabetes with early intervention. Some expectant mothers experience gestational diabetes during pregnancy.
