The founder and Medical Director of the Cleveland Cord Blood Bank is Mary J. Laughlin M.D.; she performed the world's first cord blood transplant of an adult leukemia patient in 1993. In addition to the US donation inventory maintained by NMDP, Cleveland Cord Blood Bank also participates in the BMDW international registry of cord blood donations. The Cleveland Cord Blood Center started in 2008, and by March 2010 they claimed to have collected 5500 donations, of which 1800 were banked.
The Cleveland Cord Blood Center works with philanthropic foundations to raise funding for their public bank. Thanks to a grant from the Atlanta-based Katz Foundation, they have been able to collect cord blood at hospitals in Georgia.
