About
The founder and Medical Director of the Cleveland Cord Blood Bank is Mary J. Laughlin M.D.; she performed the world's first cord blood transplant of an adult leukemia patient in 1993. In addition to the US donation inventory maintained by NMDP, Cleveland Cord Blood Bank also participates in the BMDW international registry of cord blood donations. The Cleveland Cord Blood Center started in 2008, and by March 2010 they claimed to have collected 5500 donations, of which 1800 were banked.
The Cleveland Cord Blood Center works with philanthropic foundations to raise funding for their public bank. In Sept. 2013 they reported that they were accepting collections a hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.
belongs to the cohort of banks funded by HRSA to collect racially diverse donations for the national cord blood inventory. They also receive funding from philanthropic foundations.
