HRSA Awards $50 million for Transplants

Awards have been made for the components of the C.W. Bill Young Transplantation Program.  This is the national program of cord blood banking which was passed into law in Dec 2005 and is summarized on the page of this website about Cord Blood Legislation.  These programs are funded through the U.S. Health Research and Services Administration (HRSA).

Components of the program & Winners:  
  • Bone Marrow Coordinating Center - NMDP
  • Cord Blood Coordinating Center - NMDP
  • Office of Patient Advocacy and Case Management / Single Point of Access - NMDP
  • Stem Cell Therapeutic Outcomes Data Base - CIBMTR
  • Participating Cord Blood Banks - NOT REVEALED YET.

About $38 million of the $50 million total are awarded to the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) in Minneapolis, Minn., for the following two-year contracts:
  • Bone Marrow Coordinating Center - $34,910,015 
  • Cord Blood Coordinating Center - $1,850,985
  • Office of Patient Advocacy and Case Management / Single Point of Access - $1,226,354
The Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee will receive $6,180,029.  CIBMTR press release.  Note that, since July 2004, CIBMTR is partnered with NMDP.
