VITA34 patent pending

15 February 2006

VITA34, a private cord blood bank in Leipzig Germany, has applied for a patent on their sterile technique of processing cord blood.  The new VITA34 system maintains sterility from collection through processing and storage.

At present, the processing methods used by many cord blood laboratories allow the cord blood to be exposed to the air.  Even when the processing is performed under a hood, there is a small chance of contamination.  With the new VITA34 processing system, the cord blood is never poured from one container to another, and ports in the processing and storage bags are never punctured when processing agents are added.

The achievement of total sterility in cord blood processing exceeds the current "Good Manufacturing Practice" (cGMP) guidelines of the USA's FDA, which are already above the current "Good Tissue Practice" (cGTP) that the USA's FDA requires of cord blood banks.
