First statewide public CB bank in NJ
18 October 2005
Acting NJ Governor Codey has created the program by Executive Order, as reported by NorthJersey.com, The Associated Press,
and numerous radio and TV stations. Public donations of cord blood from
throughout New Jersey will be processed and stored at Community Blood Services in Paramus and the Coriell Institute in Camden. Stem
cell research is a top priority of the Codey administration. The
two storage centers will each receive $300,000 in additional funds.
To date, Community Blood Services has provided 35 units for cord blood transplants. Their CEO, Dennis Todd, says the statewide donation program could boost their public cord blood inventory from 2,600 to 10,000 over the next five years. The Coriell Institute is best known for its collection of human cells used to identify genes which are disease markers. However, they also have a cord blood collection program and have provided 7 units for transplants.
