Viacell suspends clinical trial
19 Sept 2005
Today Viacell, the parent company of Viacord, had to suspend a phase I clinical trial in which patients were receiving transplants of expanded cord blood. The trial was stopped because two patients (out of 8) developed acute Graft-versus-Host Disease (aGVHD; both recovered). Under FDA regulations, the trial is suspended; not cancelled. The price of Viacell shares dropped 22% after the announcement, which the financial magazine Motley Fool ridiculed as an over-reaction.
