Partnership Between Viacord and Genzyme

Shares of Viacell jump over 25%, to $9.34, upon announcement of a research partnership between Viacord and Genzyme. ViaCell has received a patent on its method of growing and transplanting islet stem cells. Islet stem cells produce insulin: Type I (Juvenile) Diabetes occurs when the pancreas stops making these cells. Genzyme will conduct pre-clinical research on diabetes treatments with islet cells; the partners hope to be ready to conduct human trials in two years.
