Miracle Cures With Stem Cells
December 2004
"Miraculous" cures with blood stem cells are announced, in time for the Holiday season:
- Boy who was blind now can see: Adam Susser has already received a great deal of attention as the center of an obstetric malpractice ruling. He has received cord blood stem cells in Mexico, and 5 months later he has gone from cortically blind to tracking objects with his eyes.
- Paralyzed woman can walk again: The Korea Times reports 26 Nov 2004 that a woman paralyzed from the waist down for 19 years now has sensation in her legs after cord blood stem cells were injected into her spinal cord on 12 Oct 2004. The medical team was headed by Chosun University professor Song Chang-hun, Seoul National University professor Kang Kyung-sun and Han Hoon, Ph.D, from the Seoul Cord Blood Bank (current inventory 45,000).
- Hemiplegic woman can walk and talk: A woman in Brazil received her own bone marrow stem cells, 5 days after a brain hemorrhage paralyzed one side of her body, and has fully recovered. She is the first patient in a clinical trial conducted by Hans Fernando Dohmann, director of Rio's Pro-Cardiaco Hospital.
And... more miraculous cures with stem cells that are not embryonic:
- Girl's broken skull has grown back: A large section of 7-year-old's skull was lost in a fall two years ago, but has grown back after grafts of the girl's bone were mixed with stem cells from her fat. The surgeon was Dr. Hans-Peter Howaldt of the Justus-Liebig-University Medical School in Giessen, Germany.
- More cures of spinal cord injuries: The Russian news agency Novosti reported that 6 patients bed-ridden with spinal cord damage are learning to walk again. Scientists at the Neurology Clinic of Russia's Blokhin Oncology Research Center harvested neural stem cells from the lining of the nose, grew them in culture, and injecting them into the spine.
