Do Private Banks Hurt Public Donations?
17 August 2004
The Asahi Herald Tribune reports that private cord blood banking threatens the Japanese network of public donations. Japan is the world leader in cord blood transplants: 43% of last year's stem cell transplants from unrelated donors were performed with cord blood donations.
In the United States, the rate of bone marrow transplants outnumbers cord blood transplants by approximately ten to one (based on 2002 data from CIBMTR and Netcord). Less than 5% of US parents are banking cord blood by any means. Hence, all forms of cord blood inventory would be increased by education and outreach to expectant parents.
