LEGEND FOR TABLE:

Year started UCB banking  refers to the year that the bank started family storage.  The company may have existed previously as a public cord blood bank or another form of medical company.

No. of Tranplants listed for each bank is the total number released from the laboratory that processes and stores the cord blood. If more than one bank serves as a marketing outlet for the same processing laboratory, then each of those banks will be credited with the transplant quota from that laboratory.  This number will have a star "*" if the transplants were performed by a public bank.  Only transplants without a "*" refer to transplants for customers who banked privately. 

Store whole blood or separated stem cells?  In this table, "stem cells" means that the bank processes the cord blood to separate cell types.  Most banks use laboratory processing to remove plasma and red cells from the whole blood.  The component that is stored after separation  is called the "buffy coat", and is composed of both stem cells and white cells.  The stem cells are also called "MonoNuclear Cells" (MNC).  There is no proof whether it is better to store whole blood or separated cells.  Storing separated cells is less expensive, but storing all of the blood retains the option to use other cell types.

Accreditation tells whether a bank has passed a laboratory inspection by an accreditation agency.  This column only appears for those parts of the world where some form of accreditation is relevant.  In the USA, all banks must be registered with the FDA, and the primary optional accrediting agency for family cord blood banks is the AABB.  (Please note, in the USA state of California, the California Biologics License is equivalent to an older version of AABB).  In the UK, a bank must be accredited by HTA in order to provide transplants at NHS hospitals.  Many banks around the world rely on ISO accreditation.  A separate web page explains all accreditation standards currently in use in the United States.
