Private cord blood banks advertise aggressively on the internet. Sometimes their web sites contain more propaganda than fact. By reading the Tables of Company Features & Pricing, you can compare at a glance the bank procedures, accreditations, and prices. Cord blood banking started in the United States, but has been adopted all over the world. In fact, private banking for the family has penetrated the birthing population much more completely in some other countries. As of 2008, the percentage of USA births which bank cord blood is less than 5%, yet this percentage is near 20% in Greece and near 40% in Korea (private communication). However, the legal status of cord blood can vary enormously from one country to another.
