Crioestaminal, Ciências Para a Vida, SA, was founded in 2003 as the first cord blood bank in Portugal. During more than 10 years of operation they have stored more than 50 000 samples and released 7 samples for 12 transplants. In 2011 the company also started to store the umbilical cord tissue mesenchymal stem cells. Crioestaminal cord blood bank has been accredited by the international standards AABB and ISO 9001:2000.

Crioestaminal was created in June 2003 as a public limited company and became the first private cord blood bank operating in Iberia: Portugal & Spain. They are one of the founding members of Cord Blood Europe. Crioestaminal has the national authorization of the Portugal Ministry of Health, operates their own laboratory in a clean room in Biocant Park, and has been accredited by the international standards AABB and ISO 9001:2000. During 2012 in partnership with Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC), Biocant and Molecular and Cellular Biology Institute (IMBC), Crioestaminal co-developed the first Portuguese patent to target chronic wounds in diabetic people.
