Vivocell Biosolutions is the only cord blood bank in Austria accredited by FACT-Netcord. It also holds the ASHI-accredition for its own HLA- laboratory. It was founded in 2001 by medical doctors from the Medical Universities of Vienna and Graz, and the current medical director is Peter Wernet, MD PhD. Vivocell Biosolutions provides both public donation and family storage of cord blood.

Labs and Locations

Vivocell has two cord blood processing and storage facilities located in Austria (Graz) and Germany (Langenfeld).

Business Experience

Vivocell has marketed cord blood banking since 2001, and operated its own HLA-laboratory since 2008. Since 2009 the bank also collects cord blood donations for transplants. The inventory of cord blood collections processed and stored cryopreserved is 13 000. In case of questions our staff will personally answer (telephone, e-mail, fax) and give further information.

Collection Kit

Supplies are provided for gravity collection into a MacoPharma cord blood collection bag. The type of anti-coagulant used is CPD. The collection kit is sterile both inside & outside for C-Section use.

Transportation Container

The Vivocell shipping container has thermal insulation and is guaranteed to maintain room temperature for 48 hours. The 48 hour temperature stability is a requirement of the prestigious FACT accreditation held by Vivocell. The container includes a temperature logger to confirm that internal temperature was always within the prescribed range.

Shipping Info:

Vivocell includes shipping costs in the base price. Standard shipping is by Flott-Trans, and employees of the bank pick up the blood from several hospitals and on weekends and holidays.

Processing Method

Automated cell separation using AXP equipment.
IceCube® automated freezer for cryopreservation

Components Stored

Vivocell stores the "buffy coat" layer of blood that contains the immune system cells and stem cells. Medical doctors prefer to transplant cord blood stem cells that have been processed to remove red blood cells. In addition Vivocell stores a maternal blood sample, plus 3 testing portions. Parents are provided with a certificate describing test results (cell counts, viability).

Storage Method

Vivocell final storage is in blood bags. The bags are encased in over wrap and placed inside an aluminum cassette before they are lowered into the freezer. First they go through temporary storage in a quarantine freezer, then once they have passed all testing they move to the long term freezer. The freezers use the vapor phase of cryogenic nitrogen.
