Cryo-Save Arabia, the GCC region's first private Cord Blood Stem Cell Bank, was officially launched on September 11, 2006, by the UAE Minister of Health. Cryo-Save Arabia is part of the European Bank Cryo-Save.  Cryo-Save Arabia owns and operates the region’s largest and most technologically advanced private laboratory and cryogenic preservation facility that is dedicated and designed exclusively to handle the stem cells found in the umbilical cord blood of newborns. It is accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB).

The Cryo-Save laboratory serving the GCC region, Cryo-Save Arabia is conveniently located in Dubai Healthcare City. This ensures that the samples collected are received and processed within 48 hours of birth, however more than 90% of samples are processed within 6-12 hours of birth ensuring the best possible quality with no compromise in terms of viability of the samples.

Business Experience

The Cryo-Save flagship company has been in operation since 2000, and as of October 2011 processed more than 185,000 cord blood samples, the largest number in Europe. The Cryo-Save Arabia laboratory has been in operation since 2006, established as the first private cord blood stem cell laboratory in the GCC region offering world class cord blood banking services. In 2009, Cryo-Save Arabia started offering parents the storage of MSC derived from the umbilical cord tissue through the Belgian Laboratory. Medical staff and healthcare professionals are available to answer parents’ questions in Arabic and English.

Collection Kit

•    Cryo-Save Arabia provides the physicians with state-of-the-art collection kits in order to ensure optimal collection results.
•    The cord blood collection bag is provided in the collection kit. The bags contain the proper volume of anti-coagulant (CPD), the FDA-recommended and standard anti-coagulant for cord blood, and are packed in individual aluminum sterile packaging. Each bag has two needles for increased safety and quality control. The kit provides special disinfection supplies for both the cord blood and the cord tissue collection.
•    The new collection kit also contains supplies necessary for the preservation of cord tissue, which contains stem cells that are different from the primary type found in cord blood and may help heal the body in different ways. Cryo-Save Arabia provides its parents with an individual collection kit for cord tissue.
•    Cryo-Save’s collection kit is sterile for use in or during C-Section.

Transportation Container

Cryo-Save’s collection kit includes thermal foam insulation and gel packs that control temperature during transportation to the Cryo-Save Arabia laboratory. The collections kits have been design and validated to shield the samples from extreme temperatures. Samples remain at room temperature and are transported directly to the Cryo-Save laboratory for processing. Cryo-Save’s collection kit also includes a temperature logger to monitor the temperature during the transport to the laboratory and every sample is also assessed for viability to ensure appropriate temperature controls were maintained during transportation.

Shipping Info:

•    Following the collection, the labor and delivery staff will return the collection kit to a designated family member who will call Cryo-Save to notify pick up of the kit from the hospital room. Cryo-Save arranges for the transportation from the hospital room to our laboratory with our own trained and dedicated drivers (within the UAE).
•    For outside the UAE deliveries, Cryo-Save prearranges a courier service that is approved for medical samples, to pick up the kit from the parent’s hospital room. The collection kit is pre-labeled and includes a pre-paid AWB. A tracking program ensures the kit is tracked from the time it leaves the mother’s bedside to its arrival at the laboratory.
•    Cryo-Save’s base price includes all shipping changes. Courier is available on weekends and holidays.

Processing Method

•    Cryo-Save uses automated laboratory processing to reduce possible contamination and increases laboratory capacity. Cryo-Save processing method uses the state-of-the-art automated Sepax system from the Swiss company Biosafe.  Sepax is an automated cell separation system which relies on a light beam to sense the density gradient between different cell layers after the blood has been spun in a centrifuge.  The bag kit is sterile, functionally closed, and single-use.  
•    Cryo-Save Arabia conducts detailed microbiological and qualitative testing of the cord blood sample, including stem cell counts and viability. Maternal blood tests at birth are carried out with Serology and PCR (NAT) testing.

Components Stored

•    Cryo-Save’s cord blood processing results in a red-cell reduced stem cell product, the industry standard. Buffy coat fraction containing white cells and stem cells are stored. Red blood cells and plasma are stored for future testing.
•    Parents are provided with the sample test results (including maternal test results, TNC count, MNC count, and CD34+ count) and also a Certificate of Storage.

Storage Method

•    Cryo-Save stores cord blood units in a cryobag with two compartments (80% of the unit is in one section and 20% of the unit is in the second section) in two different geographical locations (Dubai/Belgium), as well as three integrally attached segments with each bag used for testing or future expansion technologies. A family may utilize one portion of the unit and continue to cryopreserve the other.
•    Prior to storage, each cryobag is placed in a second overwrap bag, which is sealed as an extra precaution against possible cross contamination by current and yet unidentified pathogens that may be discovered in the future.
•    Each cord blood bag is placed in an aluminum outer storage canister for enhanced mechanical protection and effective long term protection.  Each canister has unique bar-coded identification labels.
•    Cryo-Save stores the stem cells in vaults, called dewars, specially designed for long-term cryostorage.
•    Samples are initially stored in a quarantine dewar, and then moved to a long-term dewar. This precaution is against contamination to ensure that the cord blood is safe for use by an unrelated donor.
•    The cord blood units are suspended above a pool of liquid nitrogen that creates a vapor-phase environment without immersing them in liquid, which can enable cross-contamination.
•    The dewars are capable of operating without electricity and there is 24/7 recording of storage condition parameters.
•    The cord blood and tissue cells are cryogenically stored in separate dewars, in different storage locations, as an added security measure and as recognition that they may have separate medical indications for use.

Insurance

•    All the process (from collection to shipping and processing) is covered by AON insurance.
•    Upon request, customers can receive an extended insurance package for all transportation risks.
•    Family will receive a monetary amount in the event of a transplant or other stem cell therapy (offered only in some countries).

Community Service

Cryo-Save offers its Cost-free Family Donation Programme, free of charge, to families wishing to store their newborn's umbilical cord blood stem cells for a family member diagnosed with a life-threatening disease currently treatable by stem cells. This programme is specifically designed to offer families in need the opportunity to have the cord blood stem cells of their expected newborn child collected and saved without any charges, aiming to treat a diseased first line relative in the near future.  
     
In order to qualify, the family member must be diagnosed with a disease that is currently treatable with umbilical cord blood stem cells, be a first degree blood relative, and have an oncologist/haematologist who agrees that the stem cells can be used for treatment. If eligible, Cryo-Save will provide the collection kit and process and store the newborn's cord blood sample, until needed, without any cost to the family.

Prices

When saving your child’s stem cells with Cryo-Save there are no hidden costs, like annual fees or extra charges for the standard testing of the samples. Cryo-Save stands for high quality and service at a fair price.

OUR OFFER
The total fee of our cord blood service is AED 13,000. This can be broken down as follows:

•    Enrollment Fee
An initial deposit of AED 3,000 for enrollment is payable before the birth of your child. Upon receipt of the signed agreement, the collection kit will be sent to you. This fee includes the cord blood collection kit, account set-up and administration fee.

•    Processing and Storage Fee
A Processing and Storage Fee of AED 10,000 will be invoiced to you after birth and successful stem cell storage. This fee includes all the testing on the cord blood and mater

•    Optional Services
Umbilical Cord Tissue Storage at 2,000 AED

The total fee includes the administration, collection kit, courier/transport, processing, testing (CD34+ stem cell count, TNC count, MNC count, Viability, and full sterility testing), and storage during the initial storage period of 20 years. It also includes the Maternal Blood Sample testing (PCR method) and transport to any transplant facility in the world.

Additional Services

•    Cryo-Save was the first company in Europe to offer the storage of umbilical cord tissue in 2009. Cord tissue banking allows families to collect and preserve a segment of the umbilical cord, which is a rich source of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), a type of stem cell that assists in building bone, cartilage and connective tissue as well as mediating the body’s inflammatory response to damaged or injured cells.
•    Cryo-Save Arabia provides the parents with a separate collection kit for the cord tissue, it contains a transport solution which controls any potential contamination from the birthing process and maintain the tissue in its optimum state during transport.
•    Cryo-Save’s cryopreservation method involves minimal manipulation of the unit and preserves the full variety of cells present in the umbilical cord.
•    Researchers are still working to determine the best method for extracting and growing stem cells from cord tissue and we believe that processing and selecting which cells to preserve, limits the potential future use of the cord to what is currently known about cord tissue.
•    If a family needs their cord tissue stem cells in the future, they will be able to draw from the best and most current technology at that time rather than being limited to only what is available today.
