Family Bank: Biocells
BioCells claim to be the second largest cord blood bank in Argentina: their headquarters are in Buenos Aires but they have several sales locations.
Labs and Locations
Biocells has been operating in Ecuador for almost 10 years, positioning itself as the first bank to cryopreserve cord blood stem cells. We work under the highest standards of technology and quality, supported by our strategic partner in the United States, Lifeforce Cryobanks, from whom we acquired rules, procedures and training according to the provisions of the AABB.
BioCells collection kit is designed for gravity collection. It uses the Rivero blood bag and the anti-coagulant EDTA. The bag is sterile both inside and out so that it can be used in the operating room for a C-section delivery.
BioCells collection kit has been validated to maintain room temperature under test conditions.
The contract price includes shipping, and arrangements are made by the bank. The courier service, Transportes Ambientales, is available on weekends and holidays.
BioCells employs trained laboratory technicians to separate stem cells by the “Rubinstein method”.
Parents are provided with a certificate describing the results of tests on their child's blood.
Final storage is in blood bags immersed in the vapor phase of cryogenic nitrogen.
Licensing & Accreditation
Acredited by the INDOT (Instituto Nacional de Donación y Trasplante de Órganos, Tejidos y Células), entity attached to the Ministry of Public Health of Ecuador. Biocells is the first private bank in the Andean Pact to receive AABB accreditation. Biocells inventory to date (Sept. 2014) is more than 7000 cord blood in storage.
BioCells began banking cord blood in 2004, established their own laboratory in 2009, and has an inventory of 4000 as of summer 2011.
Free banking is given to families where an immediate relative has a diagnosis for which transplantation is standard therapy. BioCells gives discounts to medical doctors.
BioCells initial price for enrollment and processing is USD 1400, followed by annual fees of USD 120 to maintain storage. Payment plans are available upon request.
