Progenics Cord Blood Cryobank was founded by Laboratory & Scientific Director Dr. Hongyou Yang. He has over 30 years experience in stem cell banking and has published several articles on cord blood cryopreservation. Progenics uses a unique processing method based on his research. Progenics is based in the Toronto area and their website is available in English, French, and Chinese.
Labs and Locations
Progenics owns their own laboratory at the headquarters address.
Progenics Cord Blood Cryobank was established in 2004 and has processed and stored over 10,000 cord blood samples. Progenics privately owns their office, laboratory, and storage facilities. All cord blood is stored in their secure, fireproof facility, which is located in the Greater Toronto Area and is monitored by security and a sophisticated video surveillance system.
Collection kits are shipped to clients at no extra charge (some conditions may apply). Pall collection bags, which are sterile both inside and outside, are used for cord blood collection. Pall collection bags can be safely used for either vaginal births or C-sections.
Collection kits contain gel packs to maintain cord blood at room temperature during shipping, and a temperature logger is used to monitor the temperature.
Cord blood is shipped by a medical courier company: Air Logistics. Shipping is free for hospitals located in the Greater Toronto Area. For other cities, Progenics will pay a portion of the shipping fee to make it more affordable for clients to choose the highest level of courier service (next flight out) offered by Air Logistics to ensure the highest banking quality.
Cord blood is processed using a modified double stem cell extraction technique (double processing), a manual method that was developed by the Laboratory & Scientific Director of Progenics, Dr. Yang. The method has been published in Bone Marrow Transplantation 2001 and in Transfusion 2011.
After depletion of red blood cells (by 94%) and volume reduction, Total Nucleated Cells (TNC) are stored.
Cord blood is stored in Pall bags that contain two compartments and segments for testing. To prevent contamination, bags are overwrapped and cord blood is stored in the vapour phase of liquid nitrogen.
Licensing & Accreditation
Progenics is AABB accredited, and is registered with both Health Canada and the FDA.
One cord blood sample was released for an autologous transplant in 2007 to treat a baby with neuroblastoma and the child has been healthy since then.
Storage fees are guaranteed for 20 years. A special discount is available for low volume collections. Progenics also has a quality of processing guarantee: parents will receive free cord blood banking (including 20 years of storage) if the yield of Total Nucleated Cells from processing is less than 80%. Parents are issued a quality certificate that shows results from cord blood processing.
Progenics has a Directed Donation program if a member of the cord blood donor’s family has been diagnosed with a disease that can be treated with stem cells.
The total initial cost for cord blood banking is $955 plus tax. The initial cost includes registration, a collection kit, processing, testing, and the first year of storage. Progenics offers both an annual storage option as well as a 10 year storage option. Progenics offers a variety of interest-free installment payment options and discounts are available for multiple pregnancies and siblings.
